Under the Mistletoe

Last summer, we introduced a new filler for the lips to our Grand Rapids clients Restylane Kysse. Kysse is the newest filler in the ever-expanding Restylane line, and Elite was thrilled to be one of the first practices in the area to offer it.

In April of 2020, although no one really noticed thanks to the pandemic that was just beginning to sweep the nation, the FDA approved Kysse. Kysse is intended specifically to add volume and smooth lines on the lips.

On the non-surgical side of Elite Plastic Surgery, we’ve long used Restylane Silk to add volume and definition to the lips. But Kysse has some aspects that could make it the preferred option for lip volume for some time. And as we’re now just emerging from the food coma of Thanksgiving, this is a good time to come in to add some shape to your lips for the upcoming holiday season. Because, unlike last year’s non-existent holiday party fest, this year looks like a return to a busy holiday social calendar, and your lips need to be ready under the mistletoe!

What is Restylane Kysse?

Restylane Kysse is a clear injectable gel composed of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring sugar in the human body that is responsible for hydrating and plumping the skin. It does this by binding with nearby water molecules.

Restylane Kysse is specifically meant for use on the lips. Once injected, Kysse adds fullness to the lips, and it helps smooth wrinkles above the upper lip (perioral lines).

It is available for patients over the age of 21.

What’s the difference with Kysse?

Kysse is the first dermal filler to be equipped with Optimal Balance Technology, also known as XpresHAn Technology. This technology enables Kysse to integrate into the tissues in the injected areas to achieve a more natural look.

Restylane Kysse is meant as a complement to Restylane Silk, which is also formulated for the lips. Silk delivers more volume, while still looking natural. Kysse is intended to add soft, subtle volume to the lips, while also smoothing wrinkles around the mouth.

Satisfaction

To gain FDA approval, Galderma (the maker of Restylane) had to show satisfaction rates with patients in their testing of Kysse. Those phase 3 trial patients reported these results:

  •     Participants noted improvement in lip fullness using a lower amount of filler when using Kysse versus other fillers.
  •     78% of participants reported satisfaction with their lip volume and lip appearance 1 year after their injections.

What are the side effects with Kysse?

The side effects with this new Restylane filler are the same as those with all hyaluronic acid fillers: possible bruising and redness at injections sites, possible lumps or nodules, and sensitivity at the injection sites. If lumps do form, they are easily removed with an injection of an enzyme that neutralizes the hyaluronic acid and erases the lumps.
