If you’re here reading the Elite Plastic Surgery blog, odds are you know a thing or two about the aesthetic world. In that case, you surely know the ever-expanding list of procedures that all tout delivering energy into the dermis layer of the skin to trigger a wound-healing response. The result is an increase in collagen and elastin production and younger looking, healthier skin.
But sometimes, you don’t want to get that deep. Not to cherish superficiality, there’s way too much in this social media age, but there are lots of skin issues that aren’t that deep. They’re in the epidermis, not the dermis.
At Elite Plastic Surgery, we put our ClearScan laser treatment to work on those areas.
What skin conditions can be treated with ClearScan?
Any issues with skin redness are perfect for ClearScan. For instance, rosacea, which is thought to be caused (at least in part, the full causation is somewhat of a mystery) by widening blood vessels just below the skin is a great target. Because of their proximity to the surface of the skin, they are very visible.
These issues with redness are targets of ClearScan:
- Rosacea
- Facial veins
- Telangiectasia
- Spider veins
- Broken capillaries
How does ClearScan clear these issues?
Unlike laser treatments that seek to send the energy through the epidermis into the dermis beneath, ClearScan wants things to happen in the epidermis. Your Elite aesthetician sets the ClearScan laser wavelength to match the hemoglobin in the spider vein, broken capillary, or areas of rosacea. We then deliver short bursts of laser energy down onto the blood vessels. The hemoglobin in the vein absorbs the light energy, which instantly converts to heat. When the hemoglobin heats up to a certain point it causes the vein walls to collapse inward, closing off the vein. Any blood that was moving through the vessel is instantly re-routed to an adjacent vein.
Once the vein is closed off, the body begins the process of absorbing it, basically scavenging the now-worthless vein just as it does any other waste product throughout the body. These vessels typically become far less noticeable immediately, or else they disappear completely. Some more stubborn veins may take a second treatment. Over the course of a few weeks, any remnants of the vessel disappear.
Afterwards, the area may be a little red (but it already was, so what’s the big deal, right?), but that resolves within a few hours in most cases. There isn’t any downtime.
