Using Fractions to Get Better Skin

OK, so maybe fractions weren’t your favorite part of math when you were in school. But as an adult, your skin loves fractions — fractionated non-ablative laser treatments, that is!

Fractional resurfacing at Elite effectively treats different skin disorders such as acne scars, sun spots, fine facial wrinkles, and pigmentation spots. Its effects encourage the body to create new, healthier skin. And sessions only take from 15 to 30 minutes.

What is fractional resurfacing?

At Elite, we use the ProFractional Resurfacing system. ProFractional Resurfacing rejuvenates the skin by emitting microscopic beams of light onto the target areas of the skin. The beams penetrate into the skin’s dermis layer, stimulating new production of collagen (the skin’s structural protein).

Fractional laser resurfacing is done in a series of treatments and is effective on minimizing fine wrinkles and lines, diminishing the appearance of sun spots, improving pigment problems, and giving the skin a more healthy, youthful glow.

How does it work?

Two words are key here: fractional and non-ablative. By fractional, it means the ProFractional Resurfacing laser we use sends microscopic light beams onto the skin. These beams penetrate in tiny columns down into the dermis (second layer) of the skin. This process makes the body believe it has been wounded, so it responds by producing new collagen to fix the wound. Because the laser only actually penetrates a fraction of the skin surface, with the tiny holes surrounded by untouched healthy tissue, recovery is very fast.

Non-ablative is the second important term. Ablative laser resurfacing vaporizes the top layer of the skin, literally zapping it! As you would guess, this creates a recovery time for the skin to crust over, scab, and regrow new skin. This process can also create permanent color variations and scarring. Non-ablative resurfacing doesn’t have any of these side effects.

After your treatment

After your non-ablative fractional resurfacing at Elite, you can expect the following:

  • The treated area may appear red and slightly swollen. It may also feel warm and tight, but these symptoms pass within a few hours.
  • Quick healing is the norm, as you can return to work and your normal activities in a day or two.
  • Your skin will improve with time as your body produces new cells.
