Blepharoplasty. The term sounds so involved as if it’s a major surgery somewhere on the body. In reality, blepharoplasty, commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a delicate surgery from the team at Elite that can take a decade or more off the age of your face.
Why the eyes age so much
Our eyes are surrounded by some of the thinnest skin on the entire human body. And it is exposed to the sun and the elements all the time. Think about that. Thin skin that never gets to hide behind clothing. It’s no secret why your eyes can show your age, and maybe then some.
Over time, not only do the eyelids stretch, but the muscles are supporting them also weaken. Plus, while you don’t think about it, fat often gathers above and below the eye. The result of all of this is puffy, droopy upper eyelids, and bags under the eyes.
In the upper eyelid, the goal is to remove excess skin and fat around the upper eyelid. The muscles are usually tightened, too. This procedure on the upper lids can improve vision and reduce the headaches caused by trying to see around sagging skin.
In the lower eyelid, the goal is to reduce wrinkles and improve the contour of the eyelid by removing excess skin and fat. The muscles may be tightened to correct droopiness and sagging.
Our Elite Plastic Surgery surgeons make an incision along the fold of the upper eyelid. This hides the incision in the eyelid crease. In the lower eyelid, the incision may be made just below the eyelash or inside the lower eyelid. We are especially careful with removing fat from the lower eyelid to avoid the patient acquiring a hollow appearance.
Recovery from eyelid surgery is not difficult. There will be bruising and swelling, but if you are diligent about using the cold compress we supply, you can keep them to a minimum. Most people return to work or normal activities in a week to 10 days and are good to go within two weeks.
Eyelid surgery with the Elite team is a very satisfying procedure. It takes a decade or more off of your facial age, yet is a very subtle change. Call us at 616-459-1907 to schedule a consultation.
