Freeze Your Fat Like Lake Superior

CoolSculpting Grand Rapids MIAs the last ore boats are making their way across Lake Superior, keeping an eye on the ice in the water, it reminds us that this is a great time to freeze your fat at Elite Plastic Surgery.

OK, CoolSculpting isn’t quite the same as three feet of lake ice, but you don’t need to call an icebreaker, either.

This is a great time to eliminate some fat with CoolSculpting, so that come the spring and summer, you’ll be ready to break out the bikini for those trips to Crystal Lake.

What is CoolSculpting?

Most of you have probably heard of CoolSculpting, the completely non-invasive method for freezing, and then disposing of, unwanted fat cells. Yes, CoolSculpting is the only FDA-cleared procedure that uses controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate fat that is resistant to exercise and changes in your diet.

CoolSculpting was actually stumbled upon by two Harvard scientists who were studying the link between children eating lots of popsicles and developing dimples in their cheeks. Dimples form when there is a lack of fat covering the muscle. These scientists wondered if the popsicles had something to do with this lack of fat. They found a correlation between the freezing temperatures created by the popsicles in the cheeks and the resulting decrease in fat.

You can see where this is going. The scientists figured that what could work for the cheeks could work for the lower abdomen, site of stubborn pockets of fat that don’t respond to exercise or diet. And they were right. CoolSculpting became a thing.

How does CoolSculpting work?

The scientists discovered that human fat cells freeze at a higher temperature than surrounding muscle and skin cells. CoolSculpting uses panels that have subtle suction. These panels draw up the skin and underlying tissue, including the fat layer. Then the CoolSculpting device delivers controlled cooling down into the tissues at precisely the temperatures that freeze the fat cells, but simply make the surrounding cells cold. The fat cells crystallize and die. Then over the course of the next few weeks your body eliminates these dead cells as it does with any other waste products. The result is a 20 percent decrease in fat in the treated areas.

Because CoolSculpting results take several weeks to fully show, November or December is a good time to have the procedure done at Elite Plastic Surgery. Come spring and summer you’ll be a slimmer, more contoured you. Contact us at (616) 459-1907 to make an appointment or with any questions.
