The solution to unwanted body fat may seem simple enough: just eat healthy and work out. However, we at Elite Plastic Surgery understand it is not always that easy. Fat can be stubborn and it can be far more complicated than many believe. While cosmetic surgery may seem like a great solution, some people are apprehensive about going under the knife. For those patients, our surgeons offer CoolSculpting to our Grand Rapids, MI patients.
What is CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting procedure eliminates stubborn fat safely and effectively, without surgery or downtime. This fat reduction treatment is the only FDA-cleared procedure to use controlled cooling to safely target and eliminate diet- and exercise-resistant fat. CoolSculpting results are proven, noticeable, and lasting, so you’ll look and feel great from every angle.
Who Is a Good Candidate For CoolSculpting?
The CoolSculpting fat-reduction procedure is specially designed for those who have unwanted fat in targeted areas. Unlike weight-loss surgery (e.g., gastric bypass), the CoolSculpting procedure is not a weight-loss solution for people who are obese. Good candidates for the CoolSculpting procedure have noticeable bulges in certain areas they’d like to get rid of. Many people want a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.
The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have the procedure if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. The CoolSculpting procedure is not a treatment for obesity. As with any medical procedure, ask your physician if the CoolSculpting procedure is right for you.
What Body Parts Can Fat-Freezing Treat?
The CoolSculpting procedure is FDA-cleared to target stubborn fat bulges in specific areas:
- Flank/side (“muffin top” or “love handle”)
- Inner thigh
- Outer thigh
- Double chin
How Does Fat-Freezing Work?
Freeze away fat? It comes down to science. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The fat cells crystalize (freeze), and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you.
How Is CoolSculpting Performed?
As the cooling begins during the first few minutes, you may typically feel intense cold. This soon dissipates. With some applicators, you’ll feel some pulling as suction is applied. The area generally goes numb within 5 to 10 minutes during treatment. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap during their CoolSculpting treatment. After the treatment, you may feel some tingling in the area for 2 or 3 minutes. Patients are usually able to return to normal activities following their appointment.
Is CoolSculpting Painful?
As the name suggests, the CoolSculpting procedure can be a little chilly. There may be pain associated with the procedure, but the numbness from the cold makes it almost unnoticeable. Controlled cooling is delivered via an applicator to freeze the targeted fat. Though you may feel intense cold initially, this feeling usually subsides within 5 to 10 minutes as the area numbs.
Because most applicators use a vacuum to draw fatty tissue into the applicator cup, you may also feel some pulling, tugging, and/or mild pinching, this feeling usually subsides within 5 to 10 minutes as the area numbs.
How Many CoolSculpting Treatments Will I Need?
You can reshape your body! We will develop a customized CoolSculpting treatment plan that addresses your problem areas. Additional sessions may further enhance your results. Your treatment plan will be specific to your body, your goals, and your budget. It’s easy to sit back, relax and say goodbye to stubborn fat. After we select the area(s) to be treated, the device is positioned on your body and controlled cooling is applied. During your procedure, you may choose to read, check email, or even take a nap.

Non-Surgical Fat Reduction Side Effects
During the procedure you may experience sensations of pulling, tugging, and mild pinching. You may also feel intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping—sensations that subside as the treatment area becomes numb.
Immediately after treatment, there may be redness and firmness; transient blanching and/or mild bruising around the edges of the treatment area; tingling and stinging. Typically, these side effects are temporary and resolve completely. Many patients do experience redness for up to a few hours after treatment. In rare cases, this redness may persist up to 2 weeks, but it will completely resolve itself.
At 1 to 2 weeks after treatment, there may be redness, bruising, and swelling; tenderness, cramping, and aching; itching, skin sensitivity, tingling, and numbness. In some cases, numbness may persist for several weeks after a treatment. Talk to your doctor if these side effects persist past 2 weeks or worsen over time.
Liposuction is a surgical way to remove unwanted fat cells. Liposuction, sometimes referred to as “lipo”, slims and reshapes specific areas of the body by removing excess fat deposits and improving your body’s shape. Coolsculpting is offering a non-surgical alternative to liposuction.
When Will I Be Able to Return to Work After Non-Invasive Body Contouring?
The CoolSculpting fat freezing procedure is completely non-surgical, so you can typically return to work and normal activities immediately.
Are CoolSculpting Results Permanent?
In the weeks and months following your procedure, your body naturally processes the fat and eliminates these dead cells. Once your fat cells are destroyed by fat-freezing, they will not return. The results of CoolSculpting are permanent in the sense that the treated cells are permanently dead. However, this does not mean that new fat cells will not develop over time. That is why our surgeons at Elite Plastic Surgery suggest that you maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine.
