Forget Netflix — Your Skin Needs Broadband

At Elite Plastic Surgery, our patients love our broadband service. Not the kind that AT&T or Xfinity charge you an arm a leg for here in Grand Rapids. Our broadband light (BBL) treatments don’t power iZombie or The Crown; they treat all sorts of skin conditions, from age spots to rosacea, from acne to broken capillaries. For issues such as acne, BBL treatments are a great alternative to taking medications for long periods of time.

What is broadband light therapy?

Broadband Light therapy is the next generation of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. The treatment uses short blasts of high-intensity light to produce younger looking skin that is firmer and more even in tone and texture. It removes many of the pigmented spots that bug you when you look in the mirror every morning.

What can I treat with BBL?

  • Pigmented lesions
  • Broken capillaries
  • Freckles
  • Age spots
  • Rosacea
  • Uneven skin texture

How does BBL work?

At Elite Plastic Surgery we deliver light energy through the BBL system to the target areas. The upper layers of the skin are targeted with the BBL. This light energy converts to heat and is absorbed by the skin and it has a few effects. First, the heat from the photothermal energy builds in the broken blood vessels, causing them to close off. Second, the heat stimulates the skin cells to regenerate and build new collagen in the area. Third, the melanin in your age spots and other pigmented areas absorbs the BBL energy and this breaks up the melanin, which is then removed by the body and is evidenced by the spots lightly peeling off in the days following your treatment. BBL firms and clears the skin. Issues such as rosacea may not be “curable,” but our BBL treatments dramatically improve the visible signs.

What is a BBL treatment like?

In our BBL treatments, we protect your eyes with safety glasses. You’ll feel a warm sensation and a feeling like a rubber band snap when we deliver the light bursts. There isn’t any need for topical anesthetic, as the procedure is easily tolerated. There isn’t any downtime, either. You simply need to protect your skin against sun exposure for a few weeks after your treatments.

Number of treatments

A series of BBL treatments is usually the most beneficial, but this depends upon your goals. Additional sessions should be spaced from four to six weeks apart.
