What to Expect During Breast Augmentation Recovery, Week by Week

Woman with bandages wrapped around her breast after augmentation procedure. Are you considering getting implants and feeling curious about what recovery really looks like? After performing hundreds of breast augmentation procedures, our team at Elite Plastic Surgery has found that patients feel more at ease when they know what to expect post-op. Recovery can vary, but there are certain milestones to look out for.

Our board-certified plastic surgeons will explain what healing typically involves during your consultation at our office in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Here’s a general idea of what you can expect during your breast augmentation recovery.

Week 1: Rest and Healing

The first few days are when you’ll need the most rest. You’ll likely feel sore, tight, and tired, which is completely normal. Swelling and bruising can show up right away. Pain is manageable with prescribed medication, and your surgeon may ask you to wear a surgical bra for support.

Gentle walking around the house helps improve circulation, but don’t lift, stretch, or do anything strenuous just yet.

Week 2: Easing Into Movement

Most patients feel much better during the second week. Discomfort usually begins to fade, and you may be able to switch from prescription pain relief to over-the-counter options.

You can often return to light desk work or short outings, but you’ll still need to avoid exercise and heavy lifting. At this point, your implants may still feel high or firm, and this is just part of the settling process.

Weeks 3–4: Back to Daily Activities

Around the three-week mark, you’ll likely notice more natural movement and less swelling. It’s usually safe to drive, return to regular work, and do light household tasks. Gentle stretching or low-impact activity might be okay, depending on how you’re healing. Your body is still adjusting, and you’ll continue to see changes in shape and feel.

Weeks 5–6 and Beyond: Results Take Shape

By now, your implants should begin to settle into position and feel more comfortable. Many patients are cleared for full workouts and daily routines.

Final results may take up to three to six months to fully develop as swelling continues to go down and the implants settle into their long-term position.
