Rhinoplasty Recovery: What to Expect Week by Week

Cropped shot of a woman's nose after rhinoplasty recoveryRhinoplasty recovery changes considerably from the first few days to the months that follow. Swelling and bruising typically peak around two to three days later; many people return to work in about a week, and your nose continues settling long after the early healing period ends. With rhinoplasty, final refinement can take a year or longer.

At Elite Plastic Surgery in Grand Rapids, MI, Dr. Shannon Armstrong, Dr. William Cullen, Dr. Matthew Martin, and Dr. Matthew Fahrenkopf provide surgical care. The practice’s plastic surgeons have advanced training and experience in cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.

Week One: Swelling, Bruising, and Early Healing

The first week usually brings the biggest visible changes. Swelling and bruising around your nose and eyes will likely peak about two to three days after surgery. Soreness, congestion, headaches, and some stiffness are also possible.

You’ll generally keep your head elevated for the first 72 hours. A splint can protect the outside of your nose, and some procedures also involve internal splints or stitches. Bloody nasal drainage may occur for two to four days.

External dressings are removed according to your surgeon’s instructions, while internal splints or stitches are commonly removed at around one week. Depending on your job and how you’re feeling, returning to work at about this point is often possible.

Week Two: Getting Back Into Your Routine

By the second week, bruising and swelling should be less noticeable, although your nose will still be healing. You shouldn’t blow your nose during the first two weeks, and strenuous activity remains restricted.

You’ll still need to protect your nose carefully from bumps or pressure. Even when you feel much better, the nasal tissues aren’t finished healing beneath the surface.

Weeks Three and Four: Gradually Increasing Activity

After two weeks, you can generally increase activity gradually, with many people moving closer to their normal routine by the end of the third week.

Your nose may still look swollen during this period, especially as the tissues continue healing. Much of the swelling improves over the first several weeks, but this is still far from the final result.

Weeks Six to Eight and Beyond: Protecting Your Nose

Avoid direct pressure and contact sports for six to eight weeks. Your surgeon will tell you when your particular activities are safe again.

Subtle swelling can remain much longer than most people expect. Morning swelling may occur during the first year, with gradual refinement continuing for up to a year or longer.
