Getting Rid of the Hair Permanently

Laser Hair Removal grand rapids | Elite Plastic SurgeryDealing with unwanted body hair is like being cast in the lead role in Groundhog Day, the 90s movie starring Bill Murray as a weatherman stuck covering the annual Groundhog Day celebration in Punxsutawney who awakens every day only to realize he is reliving the previous day all over again.

Unwanted hair is like that. You shave, pluck, wax or attack with napalm-esque creams and the hair is gone. But then two weeks later there they are again poking their prickly little heads out of your hair follicles. Start the shaving, etc. all over again!

Ugh. Wouldn’t it be nice to be rid of most of the unwanted hair for good? At Elite, we can do just that with our laser/broadband light treatments — we get rid of the hair for good!

How does laser hair removal work?

The key to removing hair permanently is the hair follicles. Give them the business, and they won’t be able to grow hair. To do that, we use laser energy to damage the follicles. We set the laser to match your hair color. The laser then emits a microsecond burst of energy down onto a wide area of unwanted hair. The melanin in the hair (which gives the hair its color) attracts the laser energy. When the energy hits the hair, it converts to heat energy and travels down the hair shaft into the follicle. There the heat damages or destroys the follicle, preventing it from growing new hair.

The procedure is automated, as our advanced laser employs a computer-guided scanning system that automates the targeting and the wavelength of the laser energy. This ensures we can treat the widest area evenly and rapidly, all the while keeping you comfortable.

How long does it take and does it hurt?

Our laser hair procedures vary depending on the amount of hair you want to remove. The laser has a continuous cooling feature that ensures the safety and comfort of our patients during the procedure. If you have a very sensitive area of your skin, however, please let us know beforehand.

What happens after the treatment?

There may be some slight redness and swelling in the treatment areas, but this will subside in a few hours. Your hair will start falling out immediately, and the process will continue.

How many treatments will I need?

The tricky part of laser hair removal is catching the hair in the right phase of the growth cycle. The anagen (growth) phase responds best to laser treatments. But the hundreds of thousands of hairs on your body are constantly rotating through different parts of the cycle, such as the resting phase. To catch all of the hairs you want to remove in the growth phase, multiple treatments are necessary. In the end, usually, over 80 percent of the hair is permanently removed.
