Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

What is a Breast Lift?

Breast Lift Grand Rapids | Mastopexy

The breast lift procedure (mastopexy) is a cosmetic procedure that repositions the nipple and breast to a higher, more youthful position on the chest wall. Breast lift surgery is often performed for patients who have developed drooping of the breasts after breastfeeding or pregnancy. Patients may also experience loss of breast volume and drooping of the breasts after significant weight loss.

Am I a Candidate For a Breast Lift?

The ideal candidate for a breast lift (mastopexy) is experiencing flatter, saggier breasts that have lost their shape and volume. Good candidates are physically healthy and maintain a stable weight. The candidate should be a non-smoker and should not plan on having more children.

How Can I Prepare for My Mastopexy?

During your consultation, be prepared to ask a lot of questions! Our surgeons are here to answer all of your concerns. It is very important to understand all aspects of your breast lift procedure. It is natural to feel some anxiety before treatment. By discussing these feelings with our experts, they will make you feel confident before entering treatment.

Breast Lift Procedure

A breast lift is performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis. Your surgeon lifts the nipple and breast tissue to a higher position on the chest wall. In order to elevate the nipple position an incision around the nipple is necessary, and occasionally down the lower portion of the breast.

How Can I Optimize My Mastopexy Results?

The timing of the surgery is important for the best outcome. The best long-term results are achieved after childbearing has ceased. Additionally, if the procedure is performed after weight loss, the best time for a breast lift is when your weight has been stable for 6 months, and you have no further plans to lose weight. Adhering to the principles helps optimize the long-term results of breast lift as subsequent pregnancy or weight loss can change the appearance of the breast post-operatively.

Mastopexy with Implants

Combining a breast lift with a breast augmentation, also known as Mastopexy Augmentation, is the best way to correct the breasts position and shape simultaneously. This will give you the best results from your surgery.

Breast Lift Recovery

Recovery from a breast lift varies based on individual differences. Your board-certified plastic surgeon at Elite Plastic Surgery will review the recovery with you at the time of the consultation. Generally, patients wear a special surgical support bra immediately after surgery and then a soft support bra for 4-6 weeks. Patients should not wear underwire bras until 6 weeks after the procedure.

Most patients return to work after 7 days. Each patient is different. Taking the necessary time to heal is very important, so this depends on the case and the patient. It is never a good idea to rush recovery.

Breast Lift Risks

Any surgical procedure has risks. Complications are rare, but on these occasions you may experience the following:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding or hematoma formation
  • Infection
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent
  • Fatty tissue found deep in the skin might die (fat necrosis)
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Potential partial or total loss of nipple and areola
  • Deep vein thrombosis, cardiac and pulmonary complications

Our specialists will discuss these with you before you undergo treatment.
